Speed Writing

Appropriate for grades 2-12 Focus is on the correct spelling of the words You can have little prizes handy It is important to establish rules first Students can use notebooks or whiteboards Class has gone over meaning and pronunciation already. Rules: ·         Whispering, not shouting ·         Everyone must stop writing then the teacher calls time ·         Another student must check the writing STEPS OF THE GAME The teacher dramatically stands in front of the class. The teacher hides the word she/he is writing with big letters on the board. The teacher builds student excitement by asking if the students are ready. The teacher jumps to the side and reveals the word. Students write the word as quickly and AS MANY TIMES AS POSSIBLE. The teacher keeps track of time 30 seconds to 1 minutes. The teacher shouts: “Hands up!” The students count each other’s CORRECTLY written words. The teacher writes either the top the three, the top number, or each students number of correctly written words.
